Homeschooling Without Regrets: Our Story and What We Teach
Why We Homeschool: Our Honest Take
Every time I turn on the news, it feels like there’s another heartbreaking headline—school shootings, teachers getting arrested, debates about bathrooms, and the list goes on. It’s overwhelming. So when people ask us, “Why did you choose to homeschool?” the answer is simple: because we believe we can do better for our kids.
Homeschooling allows us to teach our children what they need to know at their own pace, in an environment that feels safe and supportive. For us, the pros far outweigh the cons. And let me be clear—we’re not here to judge anyone who chooses traditional schooling. Every family is different. If public or private school works for you, that’s great! For our family, homeschooling fits like a glove.
What Our Kids Learn at Home
Our kids learn all the core subjects—Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science—just like they would in school. But here’s the bonus: they also learn the things schools don’t teach anymore. Things like:
Baking and cooking (because everyone should know how to feed themselves!)
Sewing and cleaning
Changing the oil in a car or truck
Fixing a flat tire
Basic electrical and plumbing skills
Caring for animals
Money management
Growing and preserving food
Canning and homesteading skills
These are life skills that matter. When they’re older, they won’t just know how to pass a test—they’ll know how to live.
Faith and Family First
We’re a faith-driven family. We teach our kids to be kind, to follow Christ, and to live with purpose. That’s something we couldn’t guarantee in a traditional school setting. And honestly? They hardly ever get sick now! Last year, we tried sending the Spears kiddos to school from August to December. It was awful. They were constantly sick. When we kept them home to recover, the school complained about missed days. I get that schools want kids in class, but we don’t believe in spreading germs. By Christmas break, we had enough. We brought them back home—and never looked back.
What About Socialization?
This is the question we hear the most: “But how will they make friends?”
The truth? They make friends all the time. Between farm life, community events, church, and extracurricular activities, our kids are anything but isolated. Socialization isn’t about sitting in a classroom with 30 kids the same age—it’s about learning to interact with people of all ages in real life.
Are There Any Cons?
Hmm… let me think. Honestly, the only “con” is the amount of crafts I do now compared to before. My glue gun has never worked harder! But really, for us, there are no downsides. We teach our kids in a faith-based space, at their own pace, and give them skills they’ll actually use as adults. That’s a win in our book.
Homeschooling isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. But for us, it’s the best decision we’ve ever made for our family. If you’ve ever thought about homeschooling, or you’re curious about what it looks like day-to-day, stick around—we’ll be sharing more tips, resources, and real-life stories from our journey.
